DISUR To Discuss Possible Projects for Petrochemical Sites in Guayanilla, Penuelas
EPA approves inventory of properties to be included
in the EPA Area-wide Brownfields Planning Pilot Program
(Ponce, Puerto Rico – September 6, 2011) – Desarrollo Integral del Sur, Inc. (DISUR) discloses the result of several conversations with residents of Guayanilla and Peñuelas, Puerto Rico, who live in areas adjacent to vacant lots that were once occupied by petrochemical industries. Also, DISUR will announce which projects could be undertaken on the grounds of the industrial complex, where today structures of a once thriving petrochemical industry are now just rusted scrap metal. At the meeting, scheduled for September 14, 2011, at the Convention Center of Barrio Indios, Guayanilla, DISUR will discuss the projects that the residents of nine affected communities proposed as alternatives for a land reuse plan that DISUR is developing, according to DISUR executive director, Jacqueline Rodriguez Hernandez.
"This project is part of the initiatives DISUR developed to benefit of rural communities of Guayanilla and Peñuelas, adjacent to the CORCO site. We take into account the views of residents because we seek to develop a land reuse plan that is safe for the environment and in harmony with the needs of the people," said the director.
According to Maria Melendez Altieri, Mayor of Ponce and president of DISUR, in October 2010 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) granted DISUR $175,000 as part of its Area-wide Brownfields Planning Pilot Program, aimed at communities in the United States and Puerto Rico. DISUR's project will run until December 2012.
The funds are used for planning the cleanup and reuse of areas adjacent to the following neighborhoods: Boca, Indioss, Magas, Rufina, and Cedro in Guayanilla, and Tallaboa Poniente, Tallaboa Saliente, and Encarnacion in Peñuelas. As part of the program, DISUR created a work plan that included community workshops in which residents of nine communities proposed some projects that should be considered for the area.
"The conversations at the community workshops discussed and illustrated methods for solving the areas affected by industry. Residents expressed their concern about the problems, as well as the needs facing their communities and identified areas for executing an appropriate rehabilitation plan," said David Southgate, project manager responsible the pilot program PR#127 - Guayanilla-Peñuelas.
"The team provided the necessary tools to effectively talk about the points needed for the next stage of planning. However, the community leaders had the final say in determining what is best for the development of the area," he added.
Southgate said that at the meeting DISUR will present the properties that EPA authorized to be included in the plan for cleaning and reuse. The 12 properties, considered vacant land (brownfields) in the area of Guayanilla and Peñuelas, represent more than 25 percent of the petrochemical area, or about 800 acres.
The meeting is scheduled for 6PM. The convention center is Guayanilla's Barrio Indios neighborhood on Puerto Rico Road 335, KM 10.9.
