DISUR is selected by the American Architectural Foundation
Members of Project PR#127 will participate in the Sustainable Cities Design Academy
(Ponce, Puerto Rico - February 9, 2012) The American Architectural Foundation announced that eight public-private development teams will receive leadership training and technical assistance through the Foundation’s Sustainable Cities Design Academy. Among the teams is DISUR’s PR#127-Guayanilla-Peñuelas-“From Scrap the Future is Born”. The project team is the only group from Puerto Rico selected to participate in the workshops, to be held July in Baltimore, Maryland.
“We anticipate that the output of our participation in the Sustainable Cities Design Academy will contribute significantly to the land reuse plan for area brownfields,” said David Southgate, Project Manager for DISUR. “Being selected is a great honor for Puerto Rico and a real boost to the Project.”
Project PR#127 is part of EPA's Area-wide Brownfields Planning Pilot Program, directed towards Brownfields impacted communities in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. The funds are used for planning the evaluation, cleanup, rehabilitation and reuse of the former petrochemical lands along Puerto Rico road 127, some 3,500 acres that include nine neighborhoods in the rural municipalities of Peñuelas a Guayanillla, Puerto Rico.
DISUR’s team was selected for their proposed project known as “Peñuelas Parque Solar”, formerly Union Carbide LLC, among several Brownfields in a largely abandonded petrochemical complex. The project proposes the development of a solar panel farm and a solar panel fabrication facility.
“It is an honor for DISUR that our project team was selected to participate in the Sustainable Cities Design Academy. Certainly, this participation will provide ideas for the design and possible development of a renewable energy project, in accordance with our mission to promote economic development in the southern region,” stated María E. Meléndez Altieri, Mayor of the Autonomous Municipality of Ponce and President of DISUR.
Through various design workshops, experts of the American Architectural Foundation will provide resources, education and best practices to help these teams formulate action plans and make environmentally responsable design decisions when addressing the specific design challenges of their cities.
The Sustainable Cities Design Academy was established in 2009. Since then, 23 development teams across the United States have benefited from the program.
