DISUR's Staff
The staff at DISUR includes professionals with experience in planning, communications, and statistics. Our team is composed of the following people:
Viviam Y. Puig — Executive Director
Viviam Y. Puig has guided the advancement of the organization's action plan and development since 2005, reaching out to potential members and stakeholders; among these, mayors, community business leaders, professional and community-based organizations, and local higher education institutions. Mrs. Puig 20 years’ of professional background includes experience within the service and manufacturing industry in positions such as Industrial Engineer, Senior Quality Analyst, Director of Strategic Planning Department, and Business Consultant. She has also worked as Faculty member at the University of Puerto Rico, Ponce Campus.
She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce of Southern Puerto Rico, Porta Caribe-Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rico’s Manufacturing Association – Southern Region; and member of the Advisory Board for the Business Administration Department, University of Puerto Rico at Ponce and the Caribbean Transportation and Logistics Association. She holds a Bachelors degree in Industrial Engineering (Magna Cum Laude) from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus and a Masters degree in Business Administration from the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico, Ponce Campus.
David C. Southgate Backhouse — Project Manager and Data Administrator
David Southgate has a unique combination of experience in technology project management and communications management in both North America and Latin America. As a consultant he has worked with a variety of non-profit and community-based arts and media institutions, such as Walker Art Center; Twin Cities Public Television (formerly KTCA-TV); and the Independent Television Service. He also managed communications programs for the non-profit real estate developer for the arts, Artspace Projects, and a variety of start-up and emerging growth companies. As a project manager Mr. Southgate has more than 4,000 hours of project management experience. He is a CompTIA Project+ Certified Project Manager with project management training from Gartner Institute . He is fluent in both English and Spanish.
David holds a bachelor's degree in journalism with a triple emphasis in news-editorial, public relations and advertising from the University of Minnesota's esteemed school of Journalism and Mass Communications. He currently resides in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and is a former Director of the Chamber of Commerce of South Puerto Rico.
