The Cool Cities Coalition has recognized 20 municipalities in Puerto Rico that have signed the Climate Protection Agreement from the United States Conference of Mayors, for their commitment to reduce their contribution to global warming. The mayors of the municipalities of Yauco and Jayuya, Hon. Abel Nazario Quiñones and Hon. Jorge L. González Otero, respectively, have been the first in the region DISUR to join this effort. Throughout this campaign, the Coalition is offering an energy audit that will help municipalities to fulfill this commitment while reducing operational costs. This initiative provides mayors the simple tools that communities can implement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in their cities and to stop global warming.
We urge other municipalities in our region and the community to use this important initiative to raise awareness among citizens about the problem of environmental damage. With this initiative and the participation of the 15 municipalities in the Southern Region, DISUR can become the first Cool Region, moving the South Region towards a more competitive and sustainable region.
