DISUR participated in the forum Energy Strategies 21st Century, organized by Puerto Rico Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz, and the chairman of the Committee on Infrastructure and Urban Development, the Hon. Senator Larry Seilhamer.

Business Outlook: Entrepreneurs from South Puerto Rico Share Their Perspective with DISUR at Business Round Table

On April 8, 2010 DISUR held its First Business Roundtable at the facilities of the Port of Ponce. The purpose of the meeting was to foster direct involvement from entrepreneurial leaders in the Southern Region and exchange ideas that can contribute to DISUR's mission.

DISUR: Collaborator with the Institute of Statistics of Puerto Rico

DISUR, represented by David Southgate, Administrator of Projects and Databases, was a special guest at the First Meeting of the Coordination Committee of Statistics of the Institute of Statistics of Puerto Rico. The meeting was held March 26, 2010 in the Office of the Controller of Puerto Rico and attended by representatives of various agencies of the Government of Puerto Rico who are responsible for data collection and statistical reporting.

Agricultural Route: Back to the Countryside of Puerto Rico

Public and private sectors of the Southern Region opened a panoramic route that runs through the municipalities of Salinas, Santa Isabel, Juana Diaz and Ponce.This is the first stage of an agro-tourism plan to promote awareness around the agricultural sector and products grown on the island, according to Juan Juan Santiago, president of the Agricultural College of Puerto Rico.

Comprehensive Development: Governor Visits the South of Puerto Rico

On December 3, 2009, DISUR held a meeting with Puerto Rico Governor Luis G. Burset Fortuño and members of the DISUR Board of Directors (representatives of the public (Mayors), private and academic sectors) at Pichis Best Western Convention Center in Guayanilla. The purpose of this working session was to present the governor with the achievements and plans for economic development of South Puerto Rico and present DISUR's five region-wide strategic projects.

Port of the Americas: Cranes Arrive at Port of Ponce

January 22, 2010, Port of the Americas Rafael Cordero Santiago celebrated the arrival of two enormous cranes. Puerto Rico Governor Luis G. Fortuño, Ponce Mayor Maria "Mayita" Melendez, Secretary of Economic Development and TradeJosé Pérez Riera, Executive Director of the Port Authority of the Americas (known as APA in its Spanish initials) Rhonda Castillo Gammill, members of the Legislature and the Executive, representatives of private and academic sectors and members of the community in general attended the festivities.

New Airline for South Puerto Rico

AirDance of Puerto Rico is in the final stages of establishing domestic air services between Puerto Rico and the major cities IN North America, the Caribbean, and South America. At the moment, Airdance has Federal authorization to fly to Canada, United States, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Venezuela. It also has over 15 years of experience flying cargo in the Caribbean, offering services to UPS and Federal Express.

The company proposes that through Federal incentives, they can re-invent tourism concepts and derive greater economic benefit in the future.

Tourism: Tourist Hub for South Puerto Rico

Among DISUR's strategic projects for economic development of the South Region of Puerto Rico is a tourist hub. This project complements the efforts of the Tourism Company of Puerto Rico (and Porta Caribe) to develop and promote tourisms in the Southern Region. DISUR proposes the development of a new vacation concept where the physical and mental health, sports and family entertainment are the main attraction. This will be achieved through new investment and improvement to existing infrastructure and the development of new tourist attractions.
